Coir mats are $20-30 at the local hardware store. The natural colour of the coconut husk fibers are a good match to ripe grains, and backed with rubber. I bought one rug, flipped it over, used a craft knife to cut, and turned about a third of it into these 4″ squares, great for fantasy RPG fields, or wargame difficult terrain. A couple of scrap shreds look like they’ll be good basing material, and there’s some black dyed strips I might glue up with coloured flock for more alien or magical terrain. I got the idea for these from a half dozen different youtubers, probably Black Magic Craft first.
