So, one of my buddies got another one some big ole bugs and asked me to paint ’em up. I thought, since I had a 3d printer now and all, that I’d supplement the team with some less powerful beasties. I’ll be using OPR terms for this. The Veteran Warrior models are worth 50-80 points depending on how you kit them out, and they’re hero models so there’s a 1 or 2 unit limit for the smaller scale 200-300pt firefight games we play. I’ve got some mid-strength grunts to print and really fill out the list, but the recipient here has demonstrated an affection for popcorn units. Hence, three each of the Hive Swarm and the Spore units, which roll on 6+ but have focused advantages that can really mess up an orc’s day. The Swarm is tough, attacks three times in melee, and has poison. The spore just runs up and explodes itself for 2 hits in melee, which is hilarious to me. I’m going to hate dealing with it.
Instead of the airbrush base layer for the armour plate that the Veterans got, I zenithaled all six of these and used homemade speed paint to get the green armour done quickly. Red-brown, then flesh, then yellow-brown for the swarm legs and teeth; varieties thereof for the spores. I took the obvious bait for the one spore and painted an eyeball. Went as fast as I could because I didn’t want to spend two days on a 15-point unit, but got a pretty good “gigantic cataract eyeball” for the effort. I might be prouder of the iris than the pupil, since freehanding circles is still kind of challenging.
