I love Wargame Exclusive, and their models, and most of all I love this Ork Mek Black. Hoo boy. I was waffling about this model for months, then I got a printer and buying the file for printing was a no-brainer. It’s clearly sculpted as part of their Rocker Ork proxy line, but I’m not really running that theme. My original plan was an army visually influenced by Death Skulls with a real Irish/woad vibe. But since then I’ve encountered a whole bunch of hilarious and awesome 90’s influenced proxies for special units (TMNT, T2, etc.). Since my Tau proxies are synthwave themed, I’m probably going to bear down on 90’s media as my ork theme for OPR. None of which matters for this fella (or the 40 boyz I already painted), I just love this sculpt and I’m keeping him no matter what.
Orks are green, blue is a pretty common colour on my boyz already so I decided to stick with that for my Mek and if you’ve already got G and B why not fill it out with R? Very bright and poppy colours I don’t regret at all, and some desaturated brown to get out of the way of them. Stains on the overalls, three attempts at the beer tube until I got some bubbles I liked and then so many metallic details.
Lots and lots of NMM here, all of which I’m happy with and most of which looks okay to me. Base structure was lots of grimy dark steel with a rust effect that was a lot more subtle than the rusted-rebar terrain effect I did for my painting competition entry, but still good. Lots and lots of copper- the best I did was his necklace that got mostly hidden by the gun, but I also got some nice effects on the gun barrel and all the little attachment fixtures. Managed a pretty convincing aluminum on the beer keg with a brighter base drybrush and a thin blue glaze.
This bad boy is now sitting on my shelf waiting for me to paint my primed goblin walkers in the 90’s jazz and maybe Memphis Milano patterns, because nothing terrifies my friends more than a team of orks charging them with choppas… except three heavy weapon mechs making goblin noises and backed by a mek that removes their wounds.
