Resin discards into bases

My wife is into resin, mostly because Evan and Kaitlyn’s YouTube videos inspired her years back. She’s got dice and keychains and coasters, it’s pretty impressive. But, resin can be a little pissy and all sorts of factors can interfere with a project, and you can get miscasts or experiments that didn’t work- or experiments that did, but aren’t useful afterwards.

Enter a miniature-painting husband with an unending hunger for bits. I think the original form of this piece was for clear crystal with holographic film inclusions for a sort of glittery geode effect, for jewelry. However, I had a set of bugs that I painted up literally before I met my wife, and only ever barely got around to basing them, and most of them got clipped off their bases and I did experiments, etc. Anyway, long story short I had a boss bug that wasn’t on a base yet and when I saw this shape I knew I could tell a cool story with it.

Primed in black, then dark red, then bright red, then a layer of crackle medium and a final layer of “as close as I could get” to the colour I used for the rest of the bug bases. It’s not a perfect match for colour but it is very clearly a sort of a nest or crevice from which the bugs issue. I’ll post about this once more when I post all the bugs together.
